When I hear there’s a new Japanese restaurant opening up near me, you can guarantee I’ll be heading over there sharpish. Oliver Maki – a family-owned business which has four branches in Kuwait and one in Bahrain – opened the doors of its first UK restaurant in London, Soho, earlier this week. With Louis Kenji Huang, the former head sushi chef of Nobu, leading the kitchen team – the menu is innovative and moreish.
I was lucky enough to attend a bloggers’ lunch at Oliver Maki, meaning I got to sample a range of mouth-watering dishes (so I can recommend them to you, dear readers). The signature dish is the Oliver Maki Roll, which is made up of 8 different toppings and over 30 ingredients – including kizami wasabi, truffle, pico de gallo and chilli mustard. Each individual ‘roll’ tastes different and packs a bit of a kick – so you can either share them with a friend or have them all to yourself.
If you’ve eaten a lot of sushi, you might think there’s nothing new that can be done. The Oliver Maki Bento is therefore the ‘must-have’ thing to eat when you go to Oliver Maki, in my opinion. Here you have a see-through jewellery-style box with four different compartments each containing a different surprise: miso quinoa salad, amorous maki, tara maki and salmon teriyaki. There’s even sushi scattered on top, so you won’t go hungry and will be scraping down the sides of your little compartments with sushi sticks.
If you like tapas style starters, I also recommend the oyster shots and filo tempura shots – which are presented creatively and taste fantastic. You can then round it all off with a yuzu sorbet if you wish – so you can say you’re being healthy.
I’ll definitely be returning to Oliver Maki! It’s perfect for lunch with friends or a date, and the best way to experience it is, of course, order plenty.
