You may well be wondering why I’m blogging about brunch on a Japan blog, considering how brunch isn’t the first thing that springs to mind when you think of Japanese food. MOMMI, on Clapham High Street, is a funky Peruvian-Japanese restaurant I’ve been meaning to check out for ages and I was recently lucky enough to visit and try out their brunch menu on a Sunday. While the food we ate arguably wasn’t that Japanese, it was deliciously different!
If you’re celebrating, you can take advantage of the bottomless boozy brunch option. For £32.50 per person you get unlimited prosecco or rose wine, nibbles, a choice of main course (avocado on toast, Latin benedict, churassco steak and eggs or huevos rancheros), followed by cinnamon waffle churros. Considering the very generously-sized and filling portions, that’s worth taking advantage of.
There are other brunch menu options if you don’t fancy drinking on a Sunday morning. I was very satisfied with the pan y chicarron – crispy fried pork belly, chorizo and sweet potato, coriander creme fraiche, salsa criollo on a toasted bagel. The pork belly and sweet potato work very well together and, as you can probably guess, very filling. I deliberately chose something I normally wouldn’t go for at brunch for blog purposes (I’m a smashed avo on toast girl) but the pan y chicarron is very flavoursome and a very good choice for meat lovers who want something creative.
My friend Jenny went for the churrasco steak and eggs – a 5oz smoked rib eye of beef chargrilled on coal, with 2 fried eggs, chimichurri and sweet potato fried. She was generous enough to let me pinch some of those fries, which were very crispy. The steak itself was tender although I’m not a steak in the morning kind of person, so when I return for brunch I’ll most likely be getting that avocado on toast!
You can’t have brunch without a pot of tea and, as we were trying to make our brunch vaguely Japanese, we went for sencha. MOMMI’s tea set actually looks Japanese, which I appreciate, and the sencha itself is in leaf rather than teabag form, so you know it’s going to taste good.
I felt obliged to try a cocktail from the generous bar menu, so naturally went one with sake in it. The Norikura includes tequila, suze, sake and citrus sorbet. Maybe it’s not a Sunday morning drink but it wasn’t overly strong and was refreshing, so I don’t regret my choice.
The curse of being a blogger is that you’ll likely eat more than you should in the name of research. So I’m giving you some advice now, you do not need dessert after brunch! The pan y chicarron alone was enough to fill me up for the rest of the day (and was definitely the best thing I ate) but I still went with the yuzu and ginger cheesecake, which was surprisingly big. Despite me pleading Jenny to share with me, she was sensible and her eyes weren’t bigger than her belly. While the cheesecake was in fact very delicious and a good choice if you’re dining from the a la carte menu, I don’t recommend going the extra mile for it if you’re already very full after your excellent brunch!
You can’t go wrong with MOMMI if you want to have a good brunch south of the Thames. While this restaurant review is certainly very different to my other more traditional Japanese places, I’m glad we branched out. London has a lot to offer and even Japan bloggers need to be open-minded with their choices. Whether it’s a standard dinner or brunch, I recommend checking out MOMMI and will definitely be going back myself for dinner.
